New Research: Massage Shown to Improve Mood & Elevate Energy Levels

People looking to fend off the winter blues may find relief by integrating massage therapy into their health maintenance routine. Shorter days and colder temperatures leave many Americans feeling depressed and lethargic, yet studies show that regular massages improve mood and reset circadian rhythms, leading to better sleep and more energy.

“As we approach the colder, darker months, massage therapy may be an effective method of deflecting common seasonal challenges,” said Jeff Smoot, President of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA). “Massage benefits the way our bodies react to negative influences, whether that’s weather, anxieties or disorders.”

Massage Therapy for Anxiety & Depression
A growing body of research is documenting the impact of massage therapy for relief of anxiety and depression for people in a wide range of health situations. For example, in a controlled study composed of HIV-positive adolescents, participants who received massage therapy reported feeling less anxious and less depressed by the end of the 12-week study.

A randomized study found women with stage 1 and 2 breast cancer benefited from regular massage therapy sessions. The immediate massage benefits included reduced anxiety, depressed mood and anger while the long-term impact reduced depression and increased serotonin values. Serotonin, a neurotransmitter with functions in various parts of the body, works to regulate mood, appetite, sleep, memory and learning.

Massage therapy was also found to improve sleep, specifically by assisting with circadian rhythms, or the body clock. A study investigating the effects of massage therapy on the adjustment of rest to activity, as well as melatonin secretion rhythms in full-term infants, found massage therapy enhanced coordination of the circadian system.

Holistic Health Practitioner (HHP) Certification

Somatherapy is pleased to announce its new Holistic Health Practitioner (HHP) Certification Program  ( Proprietary Certificate Program).

Holistic HealthThe HHP Designation has long been a coveted certification for massage therapists.  It is a 1000-hour total program which builds upon our Certified Massage Therapist (CMT) curriculum with advanced classes in eastern and western modalities.  The certification combines the fundamentals of traditional Massage Therapy and blends them with energetic principles from the roots of Ayurveda and Chinese natural healing practices.   This program is the ideal training choice for those massage therapists and holistic practitioners who want to take their practice to a more integrative approach to health and wellness.  Furthermore the program offers the student an excellent opportunity and a commitment to personal growth and learning that will enable their practice to thrive.

Why Become a Holistic Health Practitioner?

As the emphasis in medicine shifts from a model of disease control and illness to one of wellness and prevention, many western or allopathic practitioners are expanding their knowledge and practices to encompass an integrated holistic approach to a client's health.  This program expands your knowledge base tremendously with courses that cover ancient and contemporary roots of healing from both eastern and western perspectives.

Topics of study include but are not limited to the following modalities:

Ayurveda: Polarity Therapy, Ayurvedic Bodywork, Marma Point Therapy

Asian and Traditional Chinese Medical Principles:  Acupressure, Shiatsu, Thai Massage and Rieki

Western Integrative Approaches to Massage and Bodywork: Myofascial Release, Neuromuscular Therapy, Cranial Sacral Therapy

The blend of these east/west approaches to massage therapy will provide you with a profound base of knowledge to be an exceptional massage therapist that will be sought out by many.  The combination of your knowledge base, your skilled touch and the perception of a person as a whole - rather than a collection of (body) parts - will facilitate your creation of a practice that preserves and supports your well-being and that of your clientele.

The Certification Process:

For completion of the HHP Certificate a student must complete the following:

  • 1000 hours of Massage Therapy Training including advanced course work from the list above. Base CMT curriculum and electives plus HHP related course work.  (Student Specific Program of study  will be advised by Somatherapy Staff)

  • A written exam over the course material, this exam is geared toward the principles of energetic assessment and treatment protocols from both Chinese and Ayurvedic natural healing.

  • A practical (hands-on) exam over the course material. You will demonstrate assessment and perform treatment protocol for a client specific need.

  • Two in-depth Case Studies (Outline Protocol will be provided) which include: client medical history  and elemental assessment and what modalities and protocols you would use and why.
